These yachts were built by New Orleans Marine of a new epoxy composite. The design was strengthened by airex filled horizontal and vertical ribs in addition to seven 360 degree bulkheads. This design is noted for its light weight, strength, flexibility and double digit speed. *** Much of the content in this blog is from people who have experience with these amazing boats.Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10821655174793558175noreply@blogger.comBlogger148125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-803296716784577111.post-85115330417670529072023-07-25T11:52:00.003-04:002023-07-25T11:52:27.617-04:00Memories: Jam/MoJoe
Bill Gately on Jam/MoJoe:

"In the "small world" arena, the only other Serendipity 43 whose deck I have ever stood on is that of MoJoe!

Back
maybe 15 years ago I sailed "Jam" back from Rockport [Maine] to Marblehead

cockpit had been extensively modified with a very large metal dodger,
her bridge deck cut away and a new 6' 5" [shoal] keel designed by Jim Taylor to
replace the 7' 9" keel with which she came.

I

Since Fruition's last post she continues to race in the local Venice, FL fleet, having won first place overall in the 2015-2016 racing season and first place in the fall 2016 series. Fruition travels to Sarasota and Tampa Bay for additional competition. In 2015 she participated in the St. Petersburg Yacht Club Classic Boat Regatta in 2015: Fruition won the "Prettiest Boat in the Fleet award - no small feat against 60 other sailboats all of whom were over 20 years old! Serendipity's are broadly appreciated now as beautiful classic racing sailboats.

Later in 2015 Fruition participated in the St. Pete Yacht Club "Regata Del Sol al Sol" to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. She finished in 4th place. None none of the other competitors in her class were able to finish due to very, very high winds (she almost had to revert to storm sails, a first since 1983!) interspersed with dead calms. Fruition would have finished in second place, as the ashore posted results indicated, but she was caught late in a dead calm: The last 36 miles to the finish line took 25 hours fighting against the Loop Current coming up between Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula with no wind to defend herself!

In 2017 Fruition raced in the "St. Pete Yacht Club to Habana Race". This was a race that had been held every year from 1930 to 1959, after which we know why it had to be abandoned. Astonishingly, 75 boats entered the race! Fruition intended to enter in the spinnaker class, but seeing the ultralight racing sleds and their 24 and 32 PHRF ratings, the crew decided to step down to the Cruising A class which had serious competitors with PHRF ratings similar to hers. The race was light wind, not Fruition's forte! Like her owner Fruition is old and overweight! End result: Fruition was one of only 22 boats out of 75 serious competitors to finish the race. Strategy and tactics are more important than speed! Older is smarter. Fruition finished 4th in her class, right behind an 84 foot Frers' designed racing machine, a brand new $5.5 million 75 foot Oyster and a new Tartan 4000 with her sail maker captain, carbon fiber sails and semi-professional crew! Fruition did remarkably well with her 1984 Hood racing mainsail, 2007 Doyle No. 1 genoa and 1982 Hood MPS sail!

Old tired boat, old tired sails, old tired crew (average age 70 years, not counting our 63 year old cabin boy! She dun good!
I spent many hours working on that boat [Wings] and it was the first to launch from San Rafael in Richmond. In the last week it was 7 X 24. There was a groove on the Richmond bridge for years from the trailer dragging on the delivery. First race was a Wednesday beercan race out of Point Richmond. I will never forget that experience. In the Big Boat Series, my job was trimming the running backs (loading up in the lulls to undbend the mast and add draft to the main). I crewed on Sioc in the 1980 Transpac and sailed with Lowell and Danny North on Moonshadow in the Big Boat Series. I was going through the archives and found the original IOR measurement certificate from 1979.

The new owner is named Poalo Conconi and he lives in Kuala Lumpur. He's and Italian businessman who has lived in Asia for many years. He and his family plan to sail Scarlett recreationally between Malaysia and Thailand. He has little sailing experience, but loves the boat. We are happy she found a good home. She is being kept in Pankor Marina about 3 hours south of KL. It is new, built about a year or two ago and is full now!

In no small part to the three horsemen - Brad, Joe G and Tom who had no real sleep and endured what must have been two inches of rain or more between about 2 AM and 4 AM.

At the start, it was a spinnaker start - fun and winds were generally on the lighter side. Later in the evening the wind speed eroded to 2 - 2 1/2 knots and we were working to keep the boat speed over 1 1/4 knots.

Wind shifts dominated - we auto-tacked what seemed like a dozen times in a row. By auto-tacked - the wind (what little there was) shifted across the bow, Genoa got backed, so we walked the Genoa around and carried on.

This period of the race was capped by what was one of the craziest spinnaker tacks: Remember the star Wars movie when Jar Jar Binks was introduced. He turns right by doing a left 270 degree turn. Well we did the same with the spinnaker. In light and shifting winds, we planned to jibe the spinnaker by flying on both sheets, and move the pole over. Classic maneuver.

However, once the wheel was over, we lost the little headway for rudder control we had and the boat kept turning into the wind. Next stop - head to wind with the spinnaker up. duhhh...thankfully we were in less than 2 knots of wind. To compound the problem we had left the blue halyard at the pulpit instead of bringing back to the mast base.

So...drop the spinnaker on the fore-deck, untangle, and re-hoist as the boat continued to slowly swing around and it fills as we end up on the proper heading. All in all it must have looked quite comical. We had a number of boats in the area that were witness to this maneuver, they all must of thought what the heck are these guys doing and man, no competition.

In the next few hours, the wind slowly built from 2.2 kts ( 1.25 kts boat speed ) up more and more. Luckily (or by design) the wind filled in from the left (more to sea) and we were the most outside boat based on continuously chasing the wind. By the time we got to the turning mark we were above the light one's upper limit in speed
but the captain had us carry it for the last few hundred yards to the tack, then we peeled in the heavy one. Wind was up to 16 kts shortly thereafter.

Bermuda Rum and dark'n'stormies followed at 6 AM followed by a couple of hours of nap by most. By 9AM the crew was up again and looking for breakfast having completed the virtual, abet brief, night.

A bit later, one of the other B class boats came in. No smiles - at all. I jokingly asked if they had seen any rain - again just grim looks. Lighten up, it's a sail boat race.

Nice work, guys!
